Rev. Don Hamer @ San Diego County Courthouse

This is a broadcast of Dr J's interview with Reverend Don Hamer (they spoke at the Prop 8 rally on the San Diego county courthouse steps), especially poignant because he passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.  Rev Hamer was a vocal supporter of Prop 8 and a leader in the Better Courts Now movement, both covered in Ruth Institute's podcasts.

Federal Ruling: Prop 8 Unconstitutional!

(August 4, 2010) Federal Judge Vaughn Walker has just declared Prop 8, the California referendum that defines marriage between one man and one woman, unconstitutional.  There are lots of strong emotions on both sides of the situation, and the case promises to go on to the 9th circuit court of appeals and, probably, the United States Supreme Court.  Dr J clarifies some aspects of the case and outlines what's at stake.

Commonwealth Club Forum: Same-Sex Marriage Court Cases at the State and Federal Levels

(February 17, 2010) The Commonwealth Club of California hosts a speaker panel to discuss same-sex marriage, both in the context of the state and federal challenges through the courts and more generally in society and culture.  The four panelists are Molly McKay, media director for Marriage Equality USA; Jennifer Roback Morse, president and founder of the Ruth Institute, Therese Stewart, Chief Deputy City Attorney, San Francisco; and Kevin Snider, attorney for the plaintiffs in the federal court case over Prop 8, and Chief Counsel of the Pacific Justice Institute.  Doug Sovern, broadcast journalist of "Sovern Nation" and 3-time winner of the AP's "Reporter of the Year" Award for California, moderates.

Prop 8 Update

(February 16, 2010) The San Francisco Chronicle broke the story last week: Justice Walker, presiding over the Prop 8 federal court case on whether to overturn the decisive will of the voters of California, is a homosexual.  Frustratingly, the news on the case up to this point has been about all the leniency and powers of intrusive investigation Judge Walker has granted to the pro-gay-marriage side of the case (which have been struck down by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, of all places).  Dr J has more on the issue...
